Therapeutic practice regularly brings us face to face with a vast diversity of self-relations. The widespread reach of psychological knowledge often leads people to form strict ideas about the "right" way to relate to oneself. As therapists, we too often hold intuitive beliefs about how a client should relate to themselves for meaningful change to become possible.

In many therapeutic approaches, these expectations are formalized into concepts of "self-love," "self-acceptance," "self-worth," and "healthy self-esteem." However, these demands can sometimes feel far too high for some of our clients and the life situations they currently find themselves in.

On the other hand, a negative relationship with oneself can be a deep source of suffering or a constricting inner limitation for the client. During this meeting, we will unpack the complexities that arise in this process and attempt to explore together: is there a fundamental form of self-relationship that can be considered baseline necessary for change to occur?
